1970's John Perry Burr Wood Pellucida Sculpture
John Perry had a thing for the ocean. From the late ’60s through the ’80s he turned out schools of dolphins, whales and sea birds, all cast in his own resin material called Pellucida and set on chunks of natural burr wood.
This sperm whale is one of those pieces — creamy resin body arcing out of its gnarled wooden base, with Perry’s metal plaque fixed to the side.
Made in California in the 1970s–80s, it’s a mix of natural and man-made that feels very much of its time, but still holds up as a sculptural little moment of sea life frozen in mid-air.
