1994 Jemez Pueblo Sculpture by Marvin Toya
Hand-carved by Native American artist Marvin Toya, this tall stone sculpture blends traditional Pueblo symbolism with a bold, sculptural form.
Toya is best known for his finely shaped animals and precise inlay work, often inspired by the landscapes and stories of the Southwest. This example shows the skill and balance he was known for — smooth curves contrasted with crisp geometric inlays, including a circular sun motif, a symbol of life and renewal in Pueblo tradition.
Pieces like this don’t appear often, especially at this size. Most that reach the market are smaller owls or turtles; larger, more architectural carvings like this tend to stay in private collections. It’s a distinctive work from a sought-after artist, carrying both craftsmanship and cultural depth.
