19th Century Lignum Vitae Maritime Fid
Carved from solid lignum vitae, this substantial fid was made for heavy rope work, where density, strength, and durability mattered more than finish. The form is simple and deliberate: a long, gently tapering shaft shaped to separate and open thick lines, with the surface worn smooth through repeated use rather than polishing.
The weight of the wood is immediately apparent — lignum vitae was chosen precisely because it could withstand constant pressure without splitting or deforming.
What we respond to now is the confidence of the object. At over 30 inches long, it has a strong vertical presence and a clarity of purpose that reads almost architecturally once removed from its working context. It’s an object that doesn’t ask to be reinterpreted — made to last, and still doing exactly that, just quietly and convincingly.
