20 C Hand-formed Wall Tile

Hand-formed as a single slab and finished with a pale slip, this small wall tile is worked through with incised lines and raised clay marks. The surface is deliberately uneven, with combed textures and iron-rich lines cutting across the form. A hanger fitted to the reverse suggests it was always intended to be displayed rather than tiled in.
 
We chose it for the way it sits between abstraction and suggestion. There’s just enough structure to hold your eye, and enough looseness to keep it from feeling fixed. It works well on its own, or as part of a small grouping, without needing to be explained.
