20th Century Brazilian Batik Print by Jair Mendes
This piece was made using the batik technique, where hot wax is applied to fabric to block areas of colour during dyeing. As the fabric is dyed and redyed, the wax cracks slightly, creating the fine lines you see throughout the image. It’s a slow, layered process that gives each piece a textured, almost weathered look.
The artist, Jair Mendes, worked in Brazil in the mid-20th century and is known for capturing scenes of everyday life and colonial architecture using this method. His work often features warm tones, winding streets, and baroque churches like the one pictured here – a style that reflects the landscape and towns of Brazil’s interior.
