Abstract Owl Sculpture by Torres Guardia for Porta Celi.

Abstract Owl Sculpture by Torres Guardia for Porta Celi.

£50.00Price

It's taken us a little while to understand this piece and the THREE competing names of José Torres Guardia (1932 - 2017), Vicente Agulló de C. (1932 - 1994) and Abraham Dubcovsky (1930 - ?)

All three were known designers for Spanish firm Porta Celi.  The collaborative nature of the artist that worked for the firm, throughout the middle of the 20th century, meant that a single piece could often have the 'touch' of many artists.  They may have had influence in design, production, or presentation on any given piece.

As the piece is signed by Torres Guardia, that leads us to believe the he indeed was the designer behind the sculpture.  The base has the plaque on the bottom that says it was for Dubcovsky - which could imply the a collaboration between the ceramic sculpture and the travertine base or that the base was never intended to be with the owl - however they do seem intentionally together.

Now, the smaller plaque with the artist Agulló de C - this is either a marking indicating perhaps a curation of pieces (as he has a very similar style to Torres Guardia) for Porta Celi or it is infact a mistake.  We're leaning toward it was part of grouping or curation - but cannot confirm that 100%.

A fascinating piece of mid century Spanish ceramics!
