Once part of a traditional Japanese roof, this antique kawara (瓦) tile end has long since outlived the building it was made for. The six raised bosses form a simple geometric pattern, while the softened edges, chips and weathered surface speak to decades spent exposed to the elements before finding their way into a very different setting.
It's a piece that sits somewhere between archaeology and sculpture. The clay has taken on the muted grey tones that only time seems capable of producing, and despite its original purpose, it feels remarkably contemporary displayed on a shelf or table.
We love objects like this because they ask very little of the viewer. No restoration, no embellishment—just honest material, quiet geometry, and the satisfaction of knowing it has already lived an entire first life before arriving here
