Antique Japanese Shippo Kenzan
Part flower frog, part pattern study, part very satisfying object.
A Japanese kenzan with an open shippo form — the repeating interlocking circle motif often found across Japanese design, here cast into something practical, weighty and unexpectedly graphic. Traditionally used in ikebana to hold stems in place, but just as good sitting empty as a small metal object.
The surface has a soft grey patina with darker wear through the recesses, giving the whole piece a nicely handled, aged feel. The form is what makes it: useful, decorative, and pleasingly over-engineered for something so small.
A functional object with just enough geometry to become something else.
