Antique Tunisian Carpet Comb

Antique Tunisian Carpet Comb

£45.00Price

Carpet combs have historically been used in the process of weaving rugs in Tunisia and other regions with strong rug-making traditions.  They are essential for creating high-quality, tightly-woven rugs.

The comb is used to press or beat the weft threads tightly into place after they are passed through the warp threads. This ensures the rug's density and durability.  It can also help refine and straighten fibers, especially in intricate patterns.

We love that this piece has clearly been used, with a lovely patina to the metal and age to the wooden handle.  The remnants of a chain, most likely to hang the tool when not in use are still there.

There is a simple etched flower at the top of the, perhaps a stylised version of the national Tunisian flower jasmine.  There is also unreadble Arabic script, potentially a name of a person or pehaps place.

It's a beautiful piece of history and now decorative art.  Could even make a really interesting coat hook!
