'Astrological Figure' by Romarin Grazebrook

A large 1975 work by British artist Romarin Grazebrook (1934–2024), painted on glass and housed in its original hand-painted wooden frame.
 
We've had a few smaller Grazebrook works before, but nothing quite on this scale. Her work from the period is wonderfully difficult to categorise: surreal, symbolic and densely layered with figures, animals, astrological signs and repeated eyes, all arranged into strange little worlds of their own.
 
This one has plenty to unpack. A central figure is surrounded by faces, birds, fish, moons, rainbows, zodiac symbols and various other things we're less confident about explaining. The painted frame continues the work beyond the glass, complete with four gold stars at the corners.
 
Grazebrook trained at Goldsmiths and Cheltenham art colleges in the 1950s and worked between London and Morocco. Works from this extraordinary 1970s period appear only occasionally on the open market, and larger examples are particularly difficult to come across.
