Carved Elm 'Maze' Sculpture

Carved from a single, substantial block of elm, this piece focuses on mass, rhythm, and surface rather than narrative or function. The form is deliberately upright and architectural, with softly worked planes interrupted by knots, fissures, and natural compression marks in the grain. The top surface has been cut back and channelled, creating a quiet contrast between controlled intervention and the inherent movement of the wood.
 
We were drawn to this as a sculptural object first and foremost. It has real physical presence — heavy, grounded, and confident — and rewards slow looking rather than a single “front” view.
 
Unsigned, but clearly intentional, it sits comfortably in the space between studio craft and abstract sculpture, where material and form do all the talking.
