Carved Soapstone Leaning Sculpture
Carved from dense stone and finished smooth to the touch, this piece has a compact, rounded form with a single recessed channel cut through the mass. The surface shows natural variation in the stone — soft grey tones with warmer mineral markings — and it sits on a simple wooden base, likely added later for display.
It sits very comfortably alongside Shona stone sculpture, particularly the abstract works produced in Zimbabwe from the mid-20th century onwards. While unsigned, the carving language feels familiar: weight held low, forms simplified but deliberate, and a clear focus on balance and handling rather than surface detail.
We chose it because the form does the work — solid, resolved, and confident without needing explanation.
