'Chekanoff' Sculptural Stoneware Vessel
A wonderfully tactile studio pottery vessel, its low rounded form covered in dense, hand-worked lines that follow the surface almost like fingerprints.
Layers of charcoal, chalky grey and earthy red move across the body in loose bands, allowing the clay beneath to appear and disappear as you turn it.
Signed Chekanoff underneath. The maker remains something of a mystery, although another signed work — a wonderfully strange ceramic mask dated 1979 — suggests we're not the first object to emerge from their hands.
Small opening. Big personality.
