Early 20th C Japanese Yosegi Kodansu
A small Japanese kodansu, or tabletop chest, dating from around the turn of the 20th century.
Made in warm-toned wood, with five drawers, simple brass pulls and little yosegi geometric marquetry motifs worked across the fronts. The central compartment would originally have had a pair of sliding panels, now absent, leaving it as rather useful open shelving.
There are plenty of knocks, scratches and marks from a century or so of use, but that's very much part of it. A tiny piece of furniture, essentially — and an unusually good place to keep all the things that don't otherwise have one.
