Early 20th C Indian Coconut Grater
Proof that good industrial design doesn't really expire.
Originally made as a coconut grater in early 20th century India, this forged iron tool has all the presence of a small modernist plinth. Rows of hand-cut teeth rise from the surface like a field of tiny spikes, while copper rivets punctuate each corner and slender forged legs lift the whole piece clear of the table.
It's an object that has quietly outgrown its original purpose. Whether used as a display stand, a low riser for ceramics, or simply left on its own, the combination of worn metal, honest construction and unexpectedly architectural proportions gives it a sculptural quality that feels remarkably contemporary.
A humble kitchen tool, perhaps — but one that accidentally became a piece of modern sculpture along the way.
