Ecuadorean Bird Sculpture by Eduardo Segovia
This stylised ceramic bird is by Eduardo Segovia, one of Ecuador’s best-known ceramicists. Based in the city of Cuenca, Segovia built a career over decades creating one-off pieces that mix local tradition with his own imagination. His work ranges from figures inspired by Cuencano life to surreal animals and dreamlike forms.
The bird shows his signature approach — bold, sculptural shapes, painted detail to bring the face to life, and those looping “wings” that turn the form into something more than just decorative. Made from terracotta with a bright yellow beak and black painted accents, it’s instantly recognisable as his hand.
No two Segovia pieces are the same, and this one sits right in that sweet spot between folk art and modern studio pottery.
