Mid Century Elizabeth Ann MacPhail Miniature Studio PotteryTrio
Guernsey, c.1960s–70s
Three small forms, all pulling in different directions.
This miniature trio by Elizabeth Ann MacPhail leans into a blue-green glaze that breaks darker at the edges and pools into softer, almost sea-toned patches. The round vessel is compact and tactile, with a folded lip that gives it just enough movement. The hoop form is more graphic — a circular handle rising cleanly from two angled supports, somewhere between vessel and sculpture. The angular piece feels the most architectural, slab-built and rhythmic, its surface punctuated with small impressed marks.
They’re small, yes — but they’re not timid. Each one feels considered, handled, and slightly experimental. Together they read as a set of studies in form: contained, balanced, then open and structured.
We like them as a trio — they speak to each other without competing.
About Elizabeth Ann MacPhail
Elizabeth Ann MacPhail worked at Briglin Pottery, London, in the late 1950s before establishing her own studio at Grandes Rocques, Guernsey, from 1961. Her work sits within the British studio pottery tradition of the mid-20th century, combining functional form with confident hand-decoration. Pieces attributed to her Guernsey period were produced on a smaller scale and remain comparatively scarce on the market today.
