Signed Pumice Stone Sumba Sculpture
We’ve had a couple of these come through before, and every time they catch our eye in the same way — strange little faces and forms carved from pale pumice stone, somewhere between sculpture and object. They feel playful and serious all at once, almost like they could have been plucked from a set for a piece of 1970s experimental theatre.
The artist remains a mystery. There’s a distinctive red painted mark on the base — a cross with dots — and numbering that suggests they were made in small runs, possibly for galleries or design shops. We’re still no closer to pinning down the maker, but part of the appeal is exactly that: anonymous but intentional, with a clear language of their own.
