Greek Post War Brass Box by Lagatzis
Found in southern Italy but unmistakably Greek — cast in solid brass and signed by Lagatzis, whose name appears both in the relief work and stamped on the base.
Lagatzis was one of several post-war metalworkers in Athens producing these richly detailed pieces, drawing on Byzantine motifs and age-old techniques.
The double-headed eagle — once a symbol of empire — spreads its wings across the lid, surrounded by vines and curling foliage. A good weight to it, with a mellow brass glow and a neatly fitted wooden interior that’s held up beautifully.
