Hand-Carved African Mask Sculpture
What drew us to this one wasn’t really the idea of a “mask” at all, but the face itself.
The heavy central ridge, narrowed eyes and slightly uneven carving give it a surprisingly calm expression — somewhere between portrait, sculpture and object.
The surface has worn back naturally over time, softening the darker stained wood and exposing lighter areas beneath, particularly around the mouth and neck. From the side, the profile becomes even stronger. It feels less decorative the longer you look at it.
Mounted on a simple black stand, it works beautifully as a small sculptural piece rather than something purely ethnographic. Honest carving, good proportions, and a face with real presence.
