Hand-formed Clay Figures by Nivaclé Women of Paraguay
Formed from raw clay and wrapped with cotton thread, fibre, and fragments of cloth, these small figures were made by hand and without moulds, each one differing slightly in scale and stance. The materials are modest, the surfaces direct — fingerprints, compression, and uneven drying left visible.
Within Nivaclé culture, figures like these are often understood to reference womanhood, fertility, and protection, with the act of wrapping carrying as much meaning as the form itself. They are not portraits or toys, but symbolic objects, made for use and understanding rather than display.
We chose them as a group, where their presence feels collective rather than individual.
