Hokkaido Stone Calligrapher's Water Vessel

Hokkaido Stone Calligrapher's Water Vessel

£65.00Price

Some objects only make sense once you know the ritual they belonged to.

Before a brush ever touched paper, ink had to be made. Water was poured from this lidded stone vessel onto an inkstone (suzuri), where an ink stick was ground into a rich black ink. A quiet but essential companion to the Japanese writing table

Carved from the dense black stone for which Hokkaido is known, its restrained circular form is broken only by a subtle pouring lip and three finely incised rings. There is no ornament for ornament's sake; the pleasure comes from the weight of the stone, the precision of its turning, and the confidence of its simplicity.

It's the sort of object that rewards a second look. Once an everyday tool, it now reads as a piece of minimalist sculpture—proof that even the most practical objects can outlive their original purpose without losing any of their presence.
