Japanese Mid Century 'Royal Pet' Woodpecker
Japan, c.1960s–70s. Turned wood 'Royal Pet' woodpecker by Senshukai, stamped "W. Pecker", with articulated head.
The stamp is a visual joke—the bird is a woodpecker, so the maker stamped it "W. PECKER". The tiny bird icon beside it reinforces the joke.
These figures were part of Senshukai's "Royal Pet" series, produced in Japan in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They were sold individually through a mail-order subscription and were inspired by the clean, Scandinavian-style wooden animals that were popular at the time. Many were made by craftspeople with backgrounds in kokeshi doll production.
