Japanese Monkey Sculpture by Sotaro Saegusa
Sotaro Saegusa (三枝惣太郎, 1911–2006) spent much of his career exploring animal forms in cast metal, from zodiac figures to quietly sculptural studies like this one. It's easy to see why his work still feels so current.
Rather than chasing realism, Saegusa strips the monkey back to its essentials. Broad geometric planes catch the light differently as you move around it, while the darker patina of the face gently draws your attention without ever dominating the piece. It's confident, understated, and all the more engaging for what it leaves out.
Signed to the underside, this is a lovely example of Saegusa's work—equally at home alongside studio ceramics, modernist sculpture or simply on a bookshelf where it can be picked up and admired from every angle.
