Japanese Painted Wood Panel
Part architectural fragment, part abstract composition, this painted wooden panel carries decades of accumulated surface. Layers of pigment sit directly on timber, with carved relief motifs emerging beneath washes of colour that have softened and shifted over time.
Painted on both sides, each face offers a completely different rhythm. One combines vivid blue, yellow and crimson roundels around carved forms, while the reverse pares everything back to a quieter arrangement in green and rose, revealing more of the timber beneath. Neither side feels like a front or back; the piece simply changes character depending on how it's displayed.
Scuffs, worn edges and small losses are all part of its history, giving the surface an honesty that newer work struggles to imitate. Whether hung, leaned or simply appreciated as an object, it occupies that satisfying space between architectural salvage and abstract art.
