Japanese Painted Wood Panel
Part architectural fragment, part abstract composition, this painted wooden panel carries decades of accumulated surface. Layers of pigment sit directly on timber, with carved relief motifs emerging beneath washes of colour that have softened, shifted and worn with time.
Painted on both sides, each face offers a different mood. One is dominated by broad, richly textured coral-red passages that feel almost sculptural, while the reverse is far more restrained, revealing ghost-like carved forms beneath thin, translucent layers of pigment. Rather than competing, the two sides seem to complete one another.
Losses, abrasions and exposed timber are integral to the piece, giving it the character of an object that has lived several lives. Whether displayed on a wall or simply leaned on a shelf, it sits comfortably somewhere between architectural salvage and contemporary abstract art.
