Late 19th C Persian Qajar Period Brass Box
Hand made from sheet brass - cut, folded and punch decorated - with that serrated little frame around the diamond panel. Inside, it's divided into compartments and still has traces of the original red wash, which is exactly what you want on these: practical, used, and not pretending it's been sitting untouched in a cabinet since 1890.
Flip it over and you get the good bit: a printed Arabic devotional text fixed to the base. Now a maker's mark - more like a small moral/protective message. It's basically talking in contrasts (light vs darkness, love/mercy vs harm), and it lands on the idea of covering faults and protecting the owner - the kind of quiet "carry this with you" blessing you'd keep close, not show off.
