Late Victorian Architectural Tiles
Originally made for installation, this square tile retains traces of mortar on the reverse, placing it firmly in an architectural setting rather than the decorative studio world. The graphic black line work and central geometric motif are typical of late Victorian interiors, where tiles like this were used in entrance halls, hearth surrounds, thresholds, and stair landings — places designed to be seen, walked on, and lived with.
We like that it still carries that sense of use. Today it works just as easily propped on a shelf, hung on the wall, or repurposed as a trivet or tabletop accent. It’s a survivor from a functional interior — adaptable, unfussy, and still doing its job in a different way.
