Meiji Period (1868-1912) Swallow Bowl
Blue and white porcelain is hardly rare in Japan, but every now and then a piece has a little more life to it. This Meiji-period bowl was one of those. The painting is confident, the composition feels considered, and despite being over a century old it still has a freshness that's easy to appreciate.
The paired swallows at the centre are what first caught our eye, surrounded by a patchwork of floral and geometric motifs that reveal something new every time you pick it up. It's decorative without ever feeling overworked—a piece that has survived because it was worth keeping.
More than a century on, it's the swallows that still steal the show.
Condition: Good - minor (old) crack and a chip on the base
