Mid Century Central African Carved Mask
Carved in Central Africa (think Congo, Gabon...), this small mask was cut from a single block of wood and coloured with traces of blue, ochre and red pigments. The face is simply modelled, with sharp lines around the brow and mouth that give it a strong, graphic presence.
These compact masks were often made for hanging rather than wearing, sometimes used in domestic shrines or as decorative emblems rather than full ceremonial regalia. The age shows in the encrustation at the base and the handling marks across the back, giving it a lived history.
