Mid Century Central African Carved Mask
A compact Central African mask, hand-carved in wood and painted in earth pigments with accents of red, blue, and ochre. Likely from the Congo–Gabon borderlands, pieces like this were made by Kwele and neighbouring groups for use in initiation and ritual settings, though smaller examples such as this were often created for sale and travel.
The back shows clear adze marks from carving, with a simple drilled suspension hole at the top and centre. The flattened oval form and angular planes of the face give it a quietly graphic quality, while the surviving traces of pigment hint at its original vibrancy.
An evocative piece of 20th-century African carving — equally at home hung on a wall or propped among other sculptural forms.
