Mid Century Elizabeth Ann MacPhail Miniature Studio Pottery Duo

Mid Century Elizabeth Ann MacPhail Miniature Studio Pottery Duo

£18.00Price

Guernsey, c.1960s–70s

Small but not shy.

This pair of miniature studio pottery forms by Elizabeth Ann MacPhail show two completely different moods in very little clay. One is rounded and contained, finished in a soft speckled glaze with a dark, almost scorched band rising into a looped handle. The other is angular and expressive — slab-built, sharply profiled, the glaze pooling and breaking along the edges in that very satisfying mid-century way.

Both are hand-built, intimate pieces — the kind that sit on a desk, a shelf, or beside a stack of books and quietly hold their own. We love the contrast between control and spontaneity here; one contained and functional, the other almost sculptural. Together, they feel like a conversation in miniature.

About Elizabeth Ann MacPhail

Elizabeth Ann MacPhail worked at Briglin Pottery, London, in the late 1950s before establishing her own studio at Grandes Rocques, Guernsey, from 1961. Her work sits within the British studio pottery tradition of the mid-20th century, combining functional form with confident hand-decoration. Pieces attributed to her Guernsey period were produced on a smaller scale and remain comparatively scarce on the market today.
