Mid Century Elizabeth Ann MacPhail Oval Platter

Mid Century Elizabeth Ann MacPhail Oval Platter

£50.00Price

Guernsey, c.1960s–70s

A low, hand-built oval platter with softly rising sides and that unmistakable sea-toned glaze from her Guernsey studio years.

The surface shifts between pale celadon green and deeper mossy patches, with iron flecking breaking through at the rim and along the outer wall. You can see faint throwing lines beneath the glaze — left visible, not overworked. The edge is gently thickened and slightly uneven, which gives it weight and intention without feeling heavy.

Flip it over and there’s that warm red clay body anchoring everything — a quiet contrast to the cool glaze above.

Fruit, bread, or absolutely nothing. It carries itself either way.

About Elizabeth Ann MacPhail

Elizabeth Ann MacPhail trained and worked at Briglin Pottery in London in the late 1950s before establishing her own studio at Grandes Rocques, Guernsey, in 1961. Her Guernsey work moved further into sculptural surface treatment and atmospheric glazing while remaining grounded in functional form. Pieces from this period were produced in relatively small numbers and don’t surface frequently.
