Romarin Grazebrook Reverse Glass Portrait
These small, hand-painted glass pieces are part of a whimsical and idiosyncratic series by the late British artist Romarin Grazebook (1934 - 2024). Each work features a named figure — sometimes linked to a zodiac sign, sometimes simply imagined — paired with bold symbols and framed in brightly painted folk-style borders.
Grazebook, active mainly from the 1970s through the early 2000s, was known for her outsider-influenced visual language: playful, deeply personal, and steeped in symbolic meaning. Working in reverse glass, painted wood, and ceramics, she often used found or recycled materials and infused each piece with a blend of mysticism, humour, and identity.
These portrait-like works blur the line between astrology, storytelling, and character study. Whether depicting “Simon the Scales” or “Veronica the Virgin,” they read like fragments from an invented mythology — each framed with hand-painted daisies, stripes, or swirling motifs that expand the image into a decorative object.
Though Grazebook’s work flew largely under the radar during her lifetime, it’s now quietly collected for its raw charm, sincerity, and unmistakably original voice.
