Sculpture Inspired by Ndombasi Wuma
We picked up this striking figure with no real idea of its backstory — just a gut feeling it was something worth looking into. After some research, we came across a nearly identical image in the Getty Research Institute’s photo archive, attributed to Congolese artist Ndombasi Wuma.
His work is known for its stylised, semi-abstract forms that draw on traditional Congolese aesthetics with a distinctly modern sensibility.
Curious to learn more, we reached out to a trusted auction house for their opinion. Their view? That it’s likely a later piece made in homage to Wuma’s work — not by him, but clearly drawing inspiration from his style.
Made from what appears to be plaster or resin, the figure is signed “YA” and dated 2002. The form — kneeling, chest forward, with strong geometric limbs and a carved face hidden in the crown — captures the same quiet power found in Wuma’s originals.
Whether a student piece, tribute, or something else entirely, it remains a compelling and unusual find.
Signed YA and dated 2002.
