Surrealist Hand Painted Ceramic Pedestal Bowl

A rather large studio pottery pedestal bowl, covered in what appears to be someone’s entire visual vocabulary.

Eyes, birds, insects, figures, guitars, stars and various things we’ve given up trying to identify, all painted loosely around a wonderfully exaggerated hourglass form.

There are shades of Miró, CoBrA and the graphic language of the 1950s and 60s, although whoever made it was clearly doing very much their own thing.

Quite a lot going on. None of it particularly interested in explaining itself.
