Tiwanaku Inspired Andean Ceramic Vessel

Tiwanaku Inspired Andean Ceramic Vessel

£60.00Price

We were drawn to this one because the shape immediately tells you what it once was meant to do. The rounded body sits low and steady, the neck tightens things up, and the handle makes it practical — the kind of vessel that would originally have been used for holding or pouring rather than just being decorative. You can read that logic straight away, even before you notice the details.

Then there’s the face, set quietly at the neck. Faces do appear on ancient Andean ceramics, including those linked to Tiwanaku culture, but their meaning isn’t something that can be neatly explained. Here it’s treated lightly — more of a presence than a statement — and it works alongside the painted zig-zag bands rather than competing with them.

The base is inscribed Cultura Tiahuanaco with a reference to 300 D.C., pointing to the period the form is drawing from, and it’s signed by the maker, Orica. That combination tells you this isn’t an archaeological object, but something made later with a clear eye on older forms.
