Vintage Filipino Handwoven Rice Baskets
A beautiful example of traditional Filipino craftsmanship, this handwoven basket was likely used for winnowing rice — the age-old method of tossing grains to separate them from husks and debris. Known locally as a bilao, baskets like this have been part of daily life in rural Philippines for generations.
What makes this one special is its layered construction — the shallow inner tray sits snugly inside the outer frame, which flares slightly at the base, giving it a sculptural, almost organic feel. It’s made from natural materials like rattan or split bamboo, woven tightly with reinforced edges for strength, and aged to a warm, earthy tone over time.
It’s the kind of piece that was made to be used — practical, durable, and quietly beautiful.
These days, it makes a lovely display piece on a wall or shelf, or even a catch-all tray that adds a little history and handmade charm to your space.
