Vintage New Zealand Perfume Tree Turned Bud Vase
Hand-turned from perfume tree timber, this small vase has a softly rounded, almost pebble-like form with a narrow opening intended for a single stem. The surface is smoothly finished but left natural along the edge - for the grain to remain the focus, with the maker’s sticker clearly present underneath.
In New Zealand, “perfume tree” commonly refers to tarata (lemonwood), a native species valued for its fine grain, workability, and subtle natural scent. It was widely used by local wood-turners for small functional pieces — objects made to be handled and used rather than purely decorative.
Quade appears to have been one of those regional makers producing well-finished, signed turned wares, and we liked this example for its scale, clarity of material, and the straightforward confidence of the form.
