'Winter' Kokeshi by Murakami Kenishi
There's something wonderfully understated about this little figure. Designed by Murakami Kenichi, it represents Winter, one of four kokeshi celebrating the changing seasons. A handful of carved lines, a warm timber body and an almost unreadable expression somehow give it more personality than figures ten times as detailed.
The underside is signed by Murakami Kenichi, dated 8 August 1977, and inscribed Winter (冬) as part of the Four Seasons series, alongside a reference to Jōngara, the northern Japanese folk tradition. These small details quietly anchor the piece to a particular artist, moment and place.
One season found. Three still out there.
